Health and Safety respiratory standards have stringent filtration performance requirements to ensure users wearing personal protective equipment have safe, clean air to breathe when working in hazardous environments.

In USA, an estimated 5 million workers are required to wear respirators in 1.3 million workplaces from guidelines provided by the US Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). Industrial respirators fitted with complying filters protect workers against dangerous particulate matter and contaminants which reduce health risks that typically cause irritation to the eyes, nose, throat and lungs.

New Zealand’s WorkSafe Agency provides good advice on respiratory protection in the workplace.

Filters are also incorporated into industrial equipment such as air compressors. Air compressors are widely used in the workplace and require regular maintenance such as adding oil-based lubricants to the system. Filters fitted to compressors capture airborne lubricant oils ensuring the compressed air supplied is purified for further use.

Lanaco has developed and supplies Helix™ and Alpuro™ Filter media to multiple globally recognized industrial safety companies who distribute products such as certified respirators, compressors and masks.

Case Sudy 1:

The Helix™ Filter is being evaluated for potential use by NASA for their emergency life-support systems on the Orion spacecraft.

If an onboard fire were to unfortunately occur, a large concentration of highly toxic particles will be emitted filling the cabin and endangering the lives of the astronauts until they are captured and removed. These particles are not only nasty, but also hot and sticky, and must be captured without clogging the filter systems.

Helix™ Filter media is being evaluated as a prefilter layer for emergency personal respiratory equipment and cabin air filter systems that can be used as a first line of defence to prevent clogging in other filter layers by removing thick contaminants like molten plastic.

The Helix™ Filter is being tested for particle loading capacity, breathability, flame resistance and the ability to function even if exposed to Orion's water-based fire extinguisher systems. Helix™ Filter Technology shows its specialty and unique merits in these scenarios, as the filter’s electrostatic nature captures and retains particles and the natural wool fibre gives the filter toxin removal, bacteria removal and flame-resistant properties.

"Not only does the Helix™ Filter help protect people in urban environments where air quality is poor, but also for those in critical breathing areas such as those affected by respiratory medical conditions, emergency first responders, military, medical devices, household appliances and other vehicles less expensive than spacecrafts, such as cars, public transport… or even baby strollers." says Nick Davenport (Lanaco CEO and Founder)
